Buying Ammo Could Count Against You

Cory Booker’s S. 3544 would make it unlawful to purchase, receive or possess a firearm without a federal license, and the attorney general could weigh a “recent acquisition of firearms, ammunition” when deciding whether to deny you. Each license covers one gun and expires in five years. More than 1,000 Pennsylvanians have already signed the petition against it.

Pennsylvania doesn’t make you get a license to buy or own a gun. Cory Booker would like to fix that for you, from Washington.

His bill is S. 3544, the Federal Firearm Licensing Act. He filed it last December with seven Senate Democrats on board, Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff among them, and it’s been sitting in the Senate Judiciary Committee since. The core of it is one sentence: it’d be unlawful for any individual to purchase, receive, or possess a firearm without a valid federal license.

I read the whole bill so you don’t have to. Here’s the paperwork Booker has in mind for you.

Federal Firearm Purchasing License

Applicant checklist under S. 3544, as written

☐ Fingerprints submitted
☐ Background investigation and criminal history check
☐ Written test on firearms laws
☐ Hands-on firing test for “sufficient accuracy”
☐ Make, model and serial number of the gun you want
☐ Name of the person selling it to you
☐ Wait up to 30 days for a decision
Approved for: one firearm. Buy within 30 days. Expires in 5 years.

Want a second gun? That’s a second license. And when five years are up, renewing means meeting every one of those requirements again.

The fine print is worse than the headline

Every time a gun changes hands, the seller has to report it to the attorney general within three business days, make, model, serial number and buyer. Private sales would have to go through a licensed dealer.

Your application also gets sent to state and local officials, who can submit information claiming you’re dangerous. The attorney general can deny you over things like a prior arrest that never led to a conviction, a “history of unsafe storage,” or a “recent acquisition of firearms, ammunition.” Yes, buying ammo is on the list.

If your license is revoked, the bill tells the attorney general to set up procedures so your guns are removed. You’d get them back only if the license is reinstated.

Rights don’t come with a renewal date. Permission slips do.

Fetterman and McCormick need to go on the record

Fetterman’s a Democrat. McCormick’s a Republican. Honestly, I don’t care. They both represent Pennsylvania gun owners, and I want both of them, plus your congressman, on the record against this bill before Booker’s side ever gets the votes to push it.

Republicans hold the Senate right now, so nobody’s scheduling a vote next week. But the Left doesn’t write bills like this for next week. They write them, stack up cosponsors, and wait. Getting politicians on the record early is how you make sure it stays buried.

More than 1,000 Pennsylvanians have already signed. If that includes you, thank you, and send this to a gun owner you know. If not, add your name now.

P.S. Under S. 3544, owning a gun without a federal license would be against the law, and the license covers one gun for five years. Tell Fetterman, McCormick and your congressman: hell no.
